Luke 21:34 “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.”
Today, we look at the Return of our Lord. This is what our Lord is speaking of in today’s verse, the day that He shall return. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it so many times again, I do believe this is the generation that will see the return of the Lord! Now, just for our own thoughts and information, I wanted to mention a few things. When I was younger, I had the thought of the Return of the Lord, and thought of how in 2 Peter it uses the example of how a day to the Lord is like a thousand years here. Now, Please, Remember that is just an example to show us how our Lord is outside of time! Many will use that to say that it “proves” that the days of Creation were not literal days but were thousand-year periods. That is not true, but rather that part of the Word of God is simply using it as an EXAMPLE of how our Lord is outside of time (it even then says right afterward, that a thousand years for Him is like a day here, which proves itself and explains that it is merely an example of how our Lord is outside of time, unlike us here on Earth)!
Anyway, when I was younger I had thought about that, and thought about the Three days which referred to our Lord’s Death and Resurrection. On the Third Day, He rose from the grave, conquering sin and death, showing and revealing Himself indeed to be the Messiah, the One True God and Saviour of all! I began to think about that, and wound up thinking of how it was amazing to think how close we were to His Return, and then I went ahead and put into thought, of the Three days as Three Thousand Years, and in the Third Thousand, or “Day” so to speak, our Lord may very well return, and reveal Himself to the world, as He did when He arose from the Grave! This was of course before the year 2000, and I said to myself, “Wow, we are very close to that Third ‘Day!'” (0-1000AD as “Day One,” then 1000-2000AD as “Day Two,” and then 2000-3000AD as “Day Three”) So, if there is any truth to that, then indeed we are very close to His Return! If not, well the signs all around us, themselves, show us that His Return is just around the corner!
I recently, perhaps last week, also heard something startling. There is the very similar thought, from Jewish Christians, of relating days to thousand-year periods. However, their thoughts are that as the days of Creation were Six and God rested on the Seventh, so will be the time-line of the Return of our Lord. Six thousand-year periods, and on the Seventh day, that will be the Thousand-Year reign of our Lord, as said in Revelation 20:4. Interestingly, the World, if we follow the Biblical genealogies and years, is about 6,000 years old. The Jewish Christian thought, is that we are very close to Seventh Day (or thousand-year period), as well. I think someone told me that it was as close as I think maybe Fourteen years based on the Jewish Calendar years, I’m not entirely sure . . . I just heard this not too long ago and haven’t really looked too much into it. However, It is interesting because, again, this thought is similar to what I was thinking of the Third Day when I was younger (and I wasn’t taught it, but just thought of it from reading the Word), and again, it puts the Return of Our Lord very close! Whether or not that thought is correct also, it really doesn’t matter because the Signs all around us, prove that His Return is so close, and we most certainly shouldn’t be as the hypocrites our Lord Rebukes in Matthew 16:3 who can discern the signs of the seasons, but not discern the signs of the times!
Yet, getting into today’s verse, let us remember and realize how close we are, as we read the warning of our Lord! We are warned to take heed to ourselves, lest we are found to be filled with surfeiting (enjoying and filling ourselves with pleasures such as food and drink), and drunkenness, and the Cares of This Life to where His Return takes us by as much surprise as the Lost in this world! As it’s been mentioned more than once in these studies, our Lord truly tells us how it will be as the time of Noah, right before God shut the door to the ark. The people were eating, drinking, being merry, living their lives as they wanted to. They didn’t even see that there was right about to come to them, judgment in the form of a flood! That is what will happen in this world, with the Return of the Lord. Yet still, our Lord also tells us how it will be as the days of Lot, and Sodom and Gomorrha! In the same way, the people were eating, drinking, being merry, and living their lives as they wanted to, not even thinking of the impending judgment that was right about to happen! However, this note also, that Lot seemed to be a little indulged in the cares of that city, as we are told that he lingered when he was told to leave immediately! The two angels that were with him, had to grab hold of his hand and the hand of his wife and daughters, and physically drag them out of the city! They had to grab hold of him and force him out, because he lingered, because he had lived there so long that the chances are, as many Christians today are, he grew attached to that place, and/or didn’t fully believe that the Lord really was about to issue judgment upon the cities (again, as many Christians feel the Lord will not return soon)!
It has been mentioned in the past few days in the studies, that indeed we should not get caught up in the things of this world, and this life, to where we let them take our attention away from serving the Lord our God and doing what He wants us to do! When He returns, will our Lord face resistance from you, as He did with Lot? I can tell you this, that if He does, you cannot guarantee that He will simply force you as He did with Lot, because if you are so caught up and so much enjoying this life and doing what you please, you have become friends with the World, and as the Word of God tells us in James 4:4, “know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” That is because you have made this life, and this world, your god and Idol, and that is because you have chosen to put those things in a higher priority than God and His Will, to serve those things rather than the Lord God Almighty!
Time is short for the Devil, as we well know. However, time is short for us as well! We don’t have hundreds and thousands of years left, to go ahead and spread the Gospel to every nation, and we don’t have all eternity to do the work in the Body of Christ that our Lord wants us to do! If we do not do what God wants us to do, then God will send someone else who will actually be faithful enough to do that thing! That is true, what was meant for us will be given to someone else! That is why our Lord warns us of that “little” that we had and were unfaithful to, will even be taken away, while the other one who was faithful with what “little” or “much” he or she was given, had increased!
Some may very sadly say, “Well that is fine, as long as I know I am saved, I will be just fine!” Oh how sad that is! That is honestly a very, VERY selfish way of thinking, and shows that we honestly don’t even care about the Lord, or else we would seek to please Him by doing what He has asked and told us in His Word, and in the Body! What is it the Lord has told us in His Word? In 1 Corinthians 9:24, “Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.” We know in the Word how our life for Christ, is indeed like running a race. However, we may very well forget something important: Those who run seek to gain the trophy at the end of the race! Only One Person actually gets the winning trophy that all seek and run for (First Place Trophy)! Therefore, we should run as fast as we can, to what God has called us to do, and even to every open opportunity we can find, otherwise someone else will get that trophy or crown that was honestly meant for you! We need to not be content with saying “Oh I’m saved, that’s all that matters,” and instead realize that while you refuse to work for the Lord, and follow His Word, and work in the body of Christ, you are losing treasure in heaven, you are losing trophies and crowns!
What if I were to tell you that I have $1,000,000 for you? What if I were to tell you also, that the catch is, that it is a prize for a race that you must run, and win? Would you run that race? What if I were to tell you that all those you may be racing against, are miles behind you, and the only way they can possibly win and beat you is if you do not want to race? Would you race then, so that you can basically have a 100% chance of winning that Prize? What if I were to tell you also, that, if you choose to race, and you get tired from running and you start to slow down and drag your feet . . . what if I were to tell you that if you promised to keep racing, and promised to keep trying to win, I would then get in my car, and pick you up, and then drive you the rest of the way so that you did not have to run anymore, because you were so tired? Would you then race? Only a complete and unashamed fool would choose not to race . . . because there would then be absolutely no way you could lose! That is a picture of what working for our Lord is like! If we don’t race, others will win and we will be left out. If we do race, we will win no matter what! Even if we think we are unable to do something for the Lord, our Lord will see our faithfulness in trying, and He will either show us another way or work we will be able to do, or He will pick us up and carry us the rest of the way when we personally reach our limit of strength and faith.
I know that we can in no way know the exact time when our Lord will return. We CAN however know when it is near, and by all means we know that it is Near! However, just think about this, what if we really did only have those Fourteen Years left, or even worse, just FOUR years left? What if God (though He wouldn’t because He wants to see if we will be faithful without knowing), actually told you WHEN He is going to return, and that time is only years away? If we had that thought, wouldn’t we all scramble about and try to get as much done as we possibly can? Wouldn’t we seek to tell our loved ones, and strangers, about our Lord Jesus? Wouldn’t we seek to wake up sleeping Christians? Wouldn’t we seek to memorize the Bible so that when we get to heaven and are asked by one of the prophets what we thought of what the Lord showed him, in “his” book, we won’t say to him, “I never even knew you had said something in the Bible, much less that there was a book named after you!”
Let us do those things, because He can very much so, return any time now. Yet He knows that we are not ready because we have not brought His Word to all nations, and we have been unfaithful in so many areas of our lives . . . He is waiting for us . . . Please, let’s not make Him continue to hold off His Return any longer, but let’s all hurry about, working as hard as He so enables us to do for Him!
I love you so much, and do continue daily to pray for you. May our Lord guide us in all we do, and may we remember the warning our Lord gave us, that we need to not get so caught up in the things of this life, that we even get caught by surprise when He comes, and worse, that we cease to work for Him, and follow His Word! Please remember to let me know what we can do these studies on. May God Bless you mightily, and you have a great and wonderful day today!
Love in Christ, Always,
Your friend forever,
Psalm 48:10 “According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness.”
