Isaiah 14:24 God’s Word is Sure
February 6th, 2012Isaiah 14:24 “The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass: and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:”
We’re going to once again pick up in the Bible studies, and prayerfully I won’t allow the enemy to keep me from faithfully doing these every day! This is the same verse we looked at last time, but I think it’s a good reminder of where to start off once more.
We see an important reminder in today’s verse: When God says something, it’s as good as done! This morning while searching for the verse we left off at ages ago, God once again reminded me of just how true His Word is. I’ve said this before, and I’ll continue to say it a million times more, that God’s Word is more True, than gravity itself.
Most of us wake up in the morning, and get out of bed, without ever having the fear that gravity is suddenly going to not work anymore and we’re going to suddenly float up to the ceiling, or we’re going to end up floating away and into space. We don’t worry about the floor suddenly giving way or not being there. We have faith that when we go to sit down in the chair for breakfast or coffee, the chair will hold us. We have faith in these things because we see these things every day and know them to be true. Yet . . . God’s Word is even truer than those things we see and put our faith in every day!
The Word assures us of this several times. In Psalm 119:89 we see that “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” To be settled, means firmly planted, it’s not moving nor changing. His Word is settled . . . forever! Mark 13:31, Jesus quite clearly shows us that, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” I also love the truth that is found in 2 Corinthians 4:18 “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
We know that the things of this world pass away. Yet quite often we place more trust in these things that pass away, than in the things of God, which NEVER pass away. The things of God, such as His Word, are eternal. They will never pass away. The things of the world, the very laws of physics even, are temporary and limited. Yet God’s Word is eternal, and truer than anything else we may run across.
I know some who would argue against that (I do wonder if they are merely arguing, for the sake of arguing though), but to put it as simply as possible: we all know the account of our Lord Jesus walking on water (among many, countless other miracles). I do believe it is safe to say that the Lord proved which was more powerful, trustworthy, and true between physics (gravity, etc.), and the Word of God (John 1:14). Then, we are told more than once that we too can do even greater things that our Lord Jesus did.
Today’s verse though reminds us that when God says something, It WILL stand, it WILL come to pass. Just as we don’t doubt that gravity will hold our foot to the ground on our next step, we need to trust something that is even MORE sure: What God says.
As we read God’s written Word, or hear God’s Word spoken directly to us, we need to remember to trust it, believe it, and hold on to it, never forgetting it. If we find ourselves doubting, we need to remind ourselves how every day we trust several things that are far less trustworthy! So what is making us doubt God? What lie, is convincing enough proof to make us doubt that what God says, is true, and will come to pass? (Remember, the very first words the devil said to mankind was an attack against God’s Word! And to this day, he continues to attack God’s Word and try to cause us to doubt!)
There’s that great phrase I haven’t heard in a while, that says something along the lines of “God said it, I believe it, That settles it.” When the devil whispers seeds of doubt into our minds and hearts, we need to be hardheaded and say that phrase. We need to quote Numbers 23:19 that says, “God is not a man, that he should lie…” If we need to, do that several times a day! Several times an hour, or even several times a minute if that’s what the battle requires of us! No matter what it takes, we need to get the priorities of what we trust (temporary things versus eternal things), set right in our minds. What God says, He means. And what He means, He will cause to come to pass!
I love you all with brotherly love and keep you in my prayers. Please continue to pray for me, as God gets past my hard head and helps me to set things straight once again in my life. I will see you all again tomorrow! May God continue to bless you, as I know He does, and I pray we never fail to see those blessings!
Love in Christ,
Your brother,
And friend,
Michael
